Traditionally, a datacenter solution has consisted of three layers: What hyperconverged means is that the solution “converges”, merges, the virtualization with the storage layer. Traditionally, these two were linked, but rarely more integrated than that. Each layer had its own management interface, upgrade and deployment procedures, and so on. Often the visibility between the layers was poor, almost non-existent. Specialized expertise was needed in all layers, which is often a major expense item on the datacenter side. Expansion was often prevented by the lack of flexibility of storage systems.
