ICT plays an important role in the digitalization of banking operations. This is also the view of Finland’s oldest bank, Aktia, which, despite its age, manages its business in a modern way—utilizing Finland’s latest core banking system.
The modernization of the data center became timely for Aktia when there was a desire to increase the level of automation in the environment. The requirements for IT solutions are high, as Aktia’s employees and customers expect services to function flawlessly at all times of the day. When designing the new environment, easy maintenance and straightforward daily operations also emerged as top priorities for Aktia.
From Testing to Implementation
Aktia’s experts conducted thorough background research before settling on the final technologies. The best technologies on the market were selected for testing, and all underwent separate proof-of-concept testing. Through this process, the test winner Nutanix was chosen as the new solution for virtualization environments.
“We chose Nutanix because we found it easy to use and maintain. We can easily manage system updates ourselves and see the entire system’s status from a single management interface. We can also perform almost all operations that need to be done on the system through the same management interface,”

In the validations, Rubrik was also selected after functional testing.
“We chose Rubrik because we found it easy to maintain, use, and expand to meet our future needs,” Stråhle explains.
NetNordic as a Partner
NetNordic was initially considered for the supplier role due to a good partner image. Ultimately, the choice was easy—NetNordic’s experts’ strong expertise and certifications in the chosen technologies were decisive.
“We chose NetNordic because they had strong experts available to us and extensive knowledge of the technologies we selected,” Stråhle summarizes.
NetNordic played a key role from the very beginning of the project. NetNordic’s experts were involved in planning, project management, and implementation alongside Aktia’s own experts. NetNordic also supported the development of the technical overall solution.
“The collaboration went very well overall, and it felt like NetNordic’s experts and our experts complemented each other well during the project,” Stråhle shares.
